C4 Suspension Overview
The fourth generation Corvette was a radical departure from General Motors early Corvette engineering.Â It eliminated a perimeter frame to support the suspension and driveline.Â Two front frame rails integrated into the first ever Corvette uni-body construction.Â This made for an interesting driveline mounting installation.Â The front suspension subframe was bolted to the frame rails while providing engine mounting points. Make sure the spring's coil ends are positioned in their respective slots in the frame bucket and control arm. With this big-picture overview in mind, it's time to look at the three fundamental components of any suspension: springs, dampers and anti-sway bars.
Work approximately one tablespoon of wheel bearing lubricant into outer bearing assembly then install wheel, outer bearing and cone, safety washer, and nut on spindle. It's recommended to work on one wheel at a time when completing this project, but you can raise the entire rear end and place the car on jack stands.
The leaf spring is supported by the lower control arm valley. The control arms, spindles and springs should now be in place. We offer a suspension rebuild for forks, shock absorbers and steering dampers. Remove spring clamps at lower and upper ends and remove spring.
Remove wheel with hub and drum assembly. They have the right knowledge, experience and tools to complete a suspension springs replacement job very easily and affordably. The only thing holding Suspension Disassembly the steering knuckle assembly together is the three bolts attached to the dust shield, caliper mount bracket, and steering knuckle arm shown below.
The sprung mass is the mass of the vehicle supported on the springs, while the unsprung mass is loosely defined as the mass between the road and the suspension springs. Because dirt cars typically see a lot of dynamic shock travel, this can at times produce what we call side loading.
This shows the link being removed from the anti-roll bar.Â The same 18mm nut and 15mm bolt are removed from the spindle knuckle. It was the rear bushings (upper mostly) causing the play. Note the position of the spacers and shims between the upper control arm shafts and the frame.
The shock is attached at the bottom to the lower control arm. I begin by cutting the outer portion of the upper control arm bushing that protrudes past the arms bushing opening. Be careful because the spindle will only be attached at the bottom ball joint and it will try to flop down.
The rear end of the strut rod is a round bushing with a bolt going through the frame mount and the bushing. Figure 6. Uppermost boom section is resting on ground, and no pins between uppermost boom section and crane body are to be removed. When it comes time to service the bushings, there are a few choices.Â Corvette Central offers new upper and lower control arms with urethane bushings installed.
So I was obviously able to get the front conical bushing out (man, was it trashed) and now I can't get enough play to clear the tube from the radius arm where it goes through the control arm. Most car shackle kits usually include bushings, bolts, nuts and sideplates.
36: With the new steering linkage assembled, measure the length of one side of the old tie rod assembly. To achieve this we went with PST Polygraphite bushings in the upper control arms and at the sway bar mounts and links, and by adding PST weld-in lower control arm bracing.
